2. Port Louis
Port Louis, the capital city of Mauritius, is a vibrant place where visitors can learn about the heritage and history of the island, beautifully integrated into the daily life of the city. Today, it is the largest administrative center and economic center of the island, while still having conserved many colonial and historic buildings such as Fort Adelaide, built in 1835 by the British. Among the main tourist attractions are the Central Market, the lively Caudan Waterfront, Mauritian Chinatown, and the Natural History Museum, each offering a glimpse into the island’s heritage and history.

You can try your luck at the casinos or simply enjoy the scenic setting and breathtaking views. The lively ambiance often leaves visitors pleasantly surprised and excited, which is why so many people highly recommend a stop here.
4. Citadel
The Citadel Fort, also known as Adelaide Fort, stands proudly on Petite Montagne hill, strategically located to offer a clear view of the harbor and Port Louis City. This exceptional Fort was built by Colonel Cunningham in the 19th century to provide security for the British Army against potential invaders. The building, made of rough, huge, rectangular blocks that turned grayish black with time, is now converted into a National Monument. Visitors are drawn to its mesmerizing surroundings, overlooking the Caudan Waterfront and the vast, endless ocean, while the fort also serves as a venue for plays and concerts.
5. Grand Baie
Grand Baie, also called Grande Bay or Grande Baie, is a lively coastal town in the North-West of Mauritius. It has grown into a fully-fledged town with plenty of restaurants, bars, and resorts lined up along its expansive white sandy beaches. From sightseeing to fun activities, there are truly endless things to do here, making it one of the island’s favorite spots.

The Full Day in the North tours of Mauritius lets you explore the most amazing sites on the island, starting from the city of Port-Louis, where battles were fought in the past and the first developments took place under French occupation and British occupation. At the SSR Botanical Garden, also called the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden or the Mauritius National Botanical Garden, you can visit one of the most visited attractions in Mauritius, located in proximity to Pamplemousses, where an incredible variety of tropical plants, many of them indigenous, can be spotted. A stroll down this history lane shows how the French occupied island shaped the development of Mauritius, with the trees narrating their own stories. Next, at L’Aventure du Sucre, the Sugar Museum and Factory, you’ll discover the island’s sweet secret, sugar, inside a 19th-century sugar mill surrounded by sugar cane fields. Awarded the Made in Moris and Blue Oasis labels for authentic and responsible tourism, the museum offers a 5000m² path with 10 interactive zones full of history, flavour, and enormous machinery, with videos and short films bringing the chronicles of sugar to life. The tour ends at Village Boutik, a 100% Mauritian brand where you can try local sugars and high-quality rums from Maison New Grove, the island’s oldest distillery at 200 years old, along with a tasting session. Back in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius and its largest city, you’ll see the economic, cultural, political and administrative hub with Le Caudan Waterfront, a bustling shopping and entertainment venue featuring world-class hotels, restaurants, the Port Louis Harbor, and a shopping complex of over 150 shops, where local artists display Mauritian artefacts. At the Port Louis Central Market and craft market, the hive of activity and wonderful ambiance make it easy to find souvenirs for the family, from locally made products, textiles, and Mauritian spices to fruits at cheap prices. A walk from the prime square along the palm-lined boulevard of Place d’Armes lets you admire French colonial buildings like the Government House and the Municipal Theater, with the Natural History Museum at the center of Port Louis. The excursion also covers Fort Adelaide (La Citadelle), built by the British in the 1830s, perched 240 ft high, offering a strategic location with a picturesque panorama of the historic harbour and Signal Mountain. Additional sights include Anglican cathedrals, Catholic cathedrals, the main city Mosque, Chinatown, the Supreme Court house, and the 18th century Barracks. Finally, at the Mauritius Postal Museum, conceived in 1995 and first housed in a former hospital building from the British occupation, later moved to the Central Post Office (a historic monument since 1958), you’ll see a collection in a spacious setting that is a real must-see. Its exhibits and artefacts showcase the Mauritius postal evolution, from the Dutch tradition of message bottles to pioneering postal initiatives under French rule and British rule, including mail delivery auctions on Rodrigues Island and key airmail milestones.
