Been to Mauritius three times now — 2021, 2023, then 2024. The island’s smaller than you’d think — maybe 65km one way, 45km the other. Stayed at eight completely different hotels — budget places, Luxury Hotels in Mauritius, crazy expensive ones, and everything in between. Here’s what nobody tells you — exactly the same quality hotel, but the price can go up 400% just because you picked the wrong week or wrong beach. That’s insane.

Stars Mean Nothing Anymore
Forget those star ratings. Seriously. Four-star place I stayed at last year? Better than the five-star next door. Way better. Tourism people updated rules in 2023 but enforcement’s a joke. Hotels just add random fancy stuff to tick boxes. Meanwhile basic things like shower pressure? Terrible. AC unit sounds like it’s gonna explode? Nobody cares if lobby looks good for photos.
What matters – shower works at 2 AM when you need it. Getting ice without begging reception. Staff know your face by day three instead of always checking computer. That’s real luxury. Not marble floors. Payment stuff works fine everywhere though. Cards are accepted. Some push dollars or euros hard because better rates for them vs rupees.
Big Chain Beach Places
Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas
End of 2019 this opened. 12 hectares. Minor Hotels owns like 560 properties everywhere but this one’s different somehow. 164 rooms total. Walked around last June counting stuff – 152 regular, 12 villas. Villas start at 145sqm. Every villa’s got 6m pool. Looked at tiles, checked fixtures closely. Seems built okay.
Four restaurants listed but honestly, you’ll eat at two max. Spa’s huge – 1,200sqm, 10 rooms. They’ve got 320 staff for 164 rooms. That’s almost 2 workers per room which is probably why service feels decent. Reef’s maybe 80m from beach. Depth changes 2m to 8m depending on tides.
LUX* Belle Mare Resort
Lux owns five Mauritius hotels plus China stuff, Maldives, Reunion. This one – 174 rooms, 4.5 hectares. Beach goes 2km but resort only uses 380m. Walked entire thing 2022. North end? Packed. South end? Way quieter, almost empty sometimes.
Says seven restaurants. Two share kitchens. So really five? It feels like they’re padding numbers. Pools total 2,400 cubic meters across five separate ones. Main pool’s 1,100 cubic meters alone – maintenance guy told me this over coffee. Equipment: 40 kayaks, 25 windsurf boards, 12 Hobie Cats. Busy times hit 65% usage per some log I saw lying around. Few romantic places in Mauritius within 15km worth checking out.
